About Us
Flying Changes Equine Rescue was founded in 2016 when it became clear that the greater Pittsburgh area needed a place for abused, neglected, unwanted horses to find “soft landings.” Flying Changes also helps dedicated horse owners facing circumstances where they can no longer provide adequate care for their beloved equines.
Flying Changes operates on a volunteer basis and relies on a network of dedicated and knowledgeable foster homes to care for the horses that we serve.
Additionally, Flying Changes relies on the generous financial support from the public through monthly sponsorships, support of various fundraising efforts, and donations during specific times of needs.
A “Flying Change” is a movement in horseback riding in which the leading leg of the canter is changed mid-stride. Done correctly, the flying change is a beautiful movement, requiring strong communication and trust between horse and rider. At Flying Changes, we seek to replicate this trust and communication by learning the specific strengths and needs of each horse to find perfect forever homes that benefit both horse and human.
Currently in our care
Trigger
TRIGGER is a 20-year old, 15.1 hand Appendix Quarter Horse (reg. Lemon Lad) who came to FCER when his owner was diagnosed with a terminal illness . Trigger has navicular and thin soles, and we’re working with a team of vets and farriers to manage his hoof care, then he’ll be looking for a long-term foster or adoptive home.
RHYTHM AND BLUES (BLUE) and
RUSTY CREEK BRANDY (BRANDY) were surrendered with their brother, LUKE, when their owner faced a life-altering medical condition. Luke has been adopted, but Blue (24) and Brandy (23) both have complicated medical conditions requiring daily meds and monitoring. Blue and Brandy are being fostered together.

Moxie (top) and Jake (bottom) were rescued together from a horrendous neglect situation just outside of Pittsburgh. With the help of our friends and partners at Allegheny Equine, both horses were nursed back to health and lived the rest of their lives as long-term residents at board member Julie’s farm.
Both have since crossed the rainbow bridge, but are still ambassadors for the rescue. They are proof that miracles can happen with a lot of love and dedication from an educated and compassionate team!
